Pull last month’s field records and ask one question of each: could you place this work on a map within fifty feet of where it actually happened? For most operations, the honest answer is no. The record has an address. The address is where the crew was sent. It is not where the valve was inspected, where the near-miss occurred, or where the splice was made. Field work is inherently location-dependent, and yet location is reliably the weakest data in the record.
The problem is not your crews
When coordinates are missing or wrong, the instinct is to look at field behavior: the crew forgot, the crew was rushed, the crew typed the wrong thing. That misses what actually happened. The crew was at the site, doing the work, with all the context in the world. The system asked them to do something unnatural: stop the task, switch to a maps app, copy coordinates, switch back, and paste them into a form. Every one of those steps is friction, and friction is where data dies. The coordinate that gets typed in later, from memory or from a screenshot, is not evidence. What an address can’t do
An address tells a crew where to go. It cannot settle what happened once they got there. A service tech submits a work order for a customer site; the customer says the tech never showed. The form says the address. Neither side is lying, and neither side has proof, a dispute that a timestamped GPS coordinate would have closed in thirty seconds. The same gap runs through compliance and asset management. An inspection recorded against an address describes a neighborhood. An inspection recorded against a coordinate describes the work. When the record has to stand up to a regulator, an auditor, or a billing dispute, that difference is the whole game.
Inside the workflow, not alongside it
The fix is not a better manual process. It is removing the manual process.
